Milet  Archaeological Site is 92 km (57 mile) far to Aydin centurum. Although Miletus obtained autonomy in 38 BC thanks to Roman emperors and became the metropolis of Ionic cities, because of the gradual silting up of its harbour with alluvium and the turning of its territory into a swamp, the city began to lose its importance from the 3rd century AD on. The city was gradually abandoned due to the spread of fatal malaria cases caused by the swamps.

The first period of excavations in Miletus was initiated in 1899 by Th. Wiegand and continued until 1938. Excavation and restoration works that were resumed after the World War II are continued today by experts from the German Archaeological Institute.
