Karanlik Kilise is 17 km (10 mile) far to Nevsehir centurum. The Dark Church was named for the low amount of light that penetrates the interior and the church was entirely decorated with frescos. It was built in the 11th century and it has four columns and three domes including a big one. Due to insufficient daylight frescoes preserved their vitality until today. The frescoes are important in combining some periods of the life of Jesus and by portraying them in a specific order. The church also has a tomb.

Compared with the other churches of Cappadocia, The Dark Church is devoid of narrative feature. The life cycle of Jesus was given in 15 scenes. 5 of them are belonging to his childhood, 2 of them are about his adulthood and 8 of them are about his suffering era. These scenes are not in the clockwise loop which is used in other churches. These scenes generally describes three periods: Gospel (Gabriel appears to the virgin Mary and foretelling the birth of Jesus ), birth and suffering era. (For detailed information see “Scenes Described in Churches”)

During the Ottoman period it was used as a pigeon house until 1950s. It too k 14 years to clean the frescoes.
