Avanos is 18 km (11 mile) far to Nevsehir centurum. In spite of the fact that it seems quite difficult to guess in which century the first frescoes were made, when the other examples are taken into consideration, it is thought that this church was built in the 9th century. In the church which consists of two layers, the frescoes included in the first layer and the frescoes included in the second layer belong to different layers.

In the South chapel, there are scenes from the life of Jesus and from the Bible. It is thought that this section was used for celebrations.  In the scenes in the North chapel, however, scenes related with death are included. The north chapel whose frescoes are livelier is also known as a graveyard chapel.

The church, whose frescoes were ruined as it was transformed into a pigeon house, has very interesting frescoes. The scene in which the deathbed of Virgin Mary is depicted is one of the leading scenes worth seeing.  In this scene in which the Apostles are present, Jesus receives Virgin Mary’s soul which is depicted by means of a baby coming out of the mouth.
